Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note:
With today's longer lasting and more powerful 4x4 trucks and SUV's, having to replace your differential and pinion bearings is becoming an expected service procedure around the midpoint of a vehicle's life cycle. Back in the 1960's and 70's, most trucks were worn out and sent to the bone yard long before they came anywhere close to 150,000 miles because most engines of that carbureted era would be crying for a rebuild at 100,000 miles and/or the body would be rust rotted. With the advent of galvanized body panels and well designed diesel and fuel injected gas engines in the late 1980's, vehicle and engine life was doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled. So now, with decent maintenance, you can expect to rebuild or replace every other part in the drivetrain before the engine goes or the body falls apart. Axles are still built to 1950's design specifications. No rear axle, in any newer hard working truck through 1 ton class, can be expected to run the life of the engine without a complete rear bearing job. Replacing the diff and pinion bearings in Dana-Spicer axles is not all that difficult, but it does take good mechanical skills and access to at least some special tools. TM4400 Manual shows you how do to the job right the first time.
Dan the Gear Man on Copyright Infringement:
One of the problems with the Internet is it is very easy to steal other peoples work and post it to the web without permission. All our tech publications, photos, and even our websites are protected by copyright laws. The financial penalties for copyright infringement are severe. Our intellectual Property Lawyer just loves going after people and chat forums that illegally post or copy our publications because they are easy to find and take to court for almost guaranteed huge $$$ damage awards. So do us both a favor, don't be a low-life thief by illegally coping or posting my work !!!
